How to prepare for Christmas when you are pregnant

When you’re pregnant, the festive season can go one of two ways. You either:

Fully embrace your mum-to-be status, allowing family and friends bump rubs, and enjoying hangover-free bank holidays.

Or, on the other hand:

You spend the season feeling rather grim, perhaps due to the burden of aching body parts and a ridiculously restricted diet.

Whatever your take on Christmas, and the weeks surrounding it, there are ways you can enhance your experience. After all, even the keenest of pregnant ladies can find the festive season tiring without the right self-care considerations.

All I want for Christmas… is me

The key to preparing for Christmas when you are pregnant is learning to put yourself first.

Whether you are a brand spanking new mum-to-be or you have older children, your 2018 is bound to get busy(ier). Even if your life feels pretty manic now, when baby arrives, your me time will be reduce significantly.

Amongst the mayhem of Christmas, allow yourself time to relax and recuperate. You will need to kick back after visiting Grandparents and popping by to see distant relatives. Even time spent with your nearest and dearest can become intense towards the end of December.

Block out some time for you. It doesn’t have to be much, maybe a quiet bath with a book, and early night, or a date with Netflix. Plan those periods into your calendar and stick to it. Allowing your body and mind time to refresh is absolutely essential.

P.S. If your body is screaming no, say no. Reject that invite. You can do it. Be strong.

Make sure everyone gets the gift memo

It’s OK to feel a little glum about the prospect of not sipping Prosecco with your Christmas pudding. After all, who doesn’t love a tipple or two when the tinsels out?

That being said, while it’s OK to miss the drink, throwing bottles of it across the room is definitely frowned upon. Surely, no one would gift Champers to the bird with the bump? You’d be surprised.

Get the memo out early to loved ones. If there’s certain foods or smells that make you turn green, if you just won’t appreciate an anticipatory bottle of bubbly, if you’d rather not try to squeeze into an optimistically-sized sweater, let people know.

This is the time to say exactly what you want. Do it for yourself. For your sanity. You’re doing everyone else a favour too. After all, all gifts are given with the very best of intentions. Your family and friends want to see you happy.
