If only I’d known ….

For this particular post the Dad behind the Rose Diaries is writing in response to a question posed by the lovely people at the website Little Stuff. They have teamed up with Aptaclub, who have launched a brilliant new ‘Preparing for Birth’ app to support Mums through the last trimester of pregnancy. The app is designed to help mum stay organised through editable checklists and answer questions with tips and advice.

So, the question being asked is ‘if only i’d known…..’

You know; those things that as you’ve gone through your parenting journey you’ve looked back with a grin and thought “If only I’d known…” In this case it will be answered by myself, from a male and new father’s perspective. so…here goes!

If only I’d known…the bath would no longer be a safe place to step into confidently, it is instead a deadly skating rink coated in the invisible remains of some sort of relaxing bath oil/cream/bomb used to help my heavily pregnant wife not get stressed.

if only I’d known… my bedroom would become an igloo one night and an oven the next. Fluctuating body temperature means you either wake up under a pile of discarded duvet next to a naked sweat bathed lobster woman or find yourself shivering, clinging to a corner of your quilt while the lobster woman has now turned into goosebump covered relation to jack frost.

If only I’d known…asking if we can find man-size maternity jeans for chicken and steak fajita night is NOT acceptable.

If only I’d known… At 3 am on the morning of our home (water) hypnobirth the tap adaptor would decide not to stay on the tap.

If only I’d known … Our midwife/mother in law/anyone I could think of wouldn’t answer my calls to tell them the baby is coming, meaning we had emergency midwives that couldn’t find our rural location, meaning I deliver my baby myself.

If only id known… I’D HAVE TO DELIVER THE BABY MYSELF.

If only I’d known…that when people tried to warn me I’d be a bit tired they actually meant I’d closely resemble a homeless zombie man-creature unable to shave or remove my comfy ‘lounging’ trousers for the entire first 2 weeks.

If only I’d known…the horrendous outcome of leaning back on the sofa and proudly holding my new baby girl aloft above my face right after 5 oz of breast milk has just been consumed. This, along with removing baby from shoulder during the burping process and peering into her mouth ‘looking’ for burps… is alot like peering down the barrel of a shotgun … foolish.

If only I’d known…more on burping babies.

If only I’d known … I’d have such a capacity to love something so unconditionally and totally, even at 12 midnight, 2am, 4am…

If only I’d known .. not to rub my tired eyes BEFORE checking my finger nails and hairs on my fingers after the 3am nappy change in the dark.

If only id known… my partners breasts would turn into Pamela Anderson’s and I am not allowed to touch/look/comment/discuss them, unless its in a paternal way.

If only I’d known … not to try and put on one of those babysling thingys on my own with no one else around to help get me out of it, partner arriving home to previously mentioned homeless zombie man creature wrapped in a spotty pink sling is not going to impress her.

If only I’d known ….

The Four Basic Hypnobirthing Techniques

Hypnobirthing is becoming more widely recognised but people continue to ask what is the basis of the technique. According to to Mongan Method, the four basic hypnobirthing techniques are:

  • Breathing
  • Visualisation
  • Relaxation
  • Deepening

Now we know that there are lots of book and CD’s out there and reading them once or twice will give you an idea but it won’t give you the conditioning you need because conditioning needs the dedication of both your mind and body.

An athelete would never compete without ensuring that their body was conditioned, why should birthing be any different?

We found that it was the Relaxation and Breathing techniques that were key to our amazing birth and would love to share this quote with you:

Muscles send messages to each other. Clenched fists, a tight mouth, a furrowed brow, all send signals to the birth passage muscles, the very ones that need to be loosened. Opening up to relax these upper body parts relaxes the lower ones“. William Sears & Martha Sears.

Birth Affirmations for a natural, active birth

The first time I heard about birth affirmations, I have to admit to being a little sceptical but the theory of affirmations is to say them repeatedly so they become part of your subconsicous and ultimately a natural part of your birthing relaxation.

HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method: A natural approach to a safe, easier, more comfortable birthing (3rd Edition) suggests repeating the affirmations below (amongst others) regularly throughout the last few months of pregnancy:

  • I am relaxed and happy that my baby is coming to me.
  • I am focused on a smooth, easy birth.
  • I trust my body and I follow its lead.
  • I feel confident. I feel safe. I feel secure.
  • My muscles work in complete harmony to make birthing easier.
  • I feel a natural tranquility flowing through my body.
  • I relax as we move quickly and easily through each phase of birth.
  • My baby is perfectly positioned for every phase of labor.
  • I fully relax and turn my birthing over to nature.
  • I feel my body gently sway with relaxation.
  • I turn my birthing over to my baby and my body.
  • My baby moves gently among its journey.
  • Each surge of my body brings my baby closer to me.
  • I deepen my relaxation as I move further into labor.
  • My body is at ease.
  • I welcome my baby with happiness and joy.

These are not all the suggested affirmations but I personally didn’t feel comfortable saying ones that talked about my cervix and womb but every mum to be is different and it makes sense to tailor your affirmations to the strength and confidence that you need.

I recall repeatedly saying “this is what my body is designed for” over and over again. I am quite sure that having confidence in my own body enabled me to have the birth I wanted.

Choosing the right affirmation for you is what will make them work. You have to be able to repeat them and believe in them, so that your belief becomes a reality.

Hypnobirth – 19-July-2012

Birth Story from Saz C ….

I was really disorganized throughout most of my pregnancy! Our little girl was planned, but as with all major events in life, she decided to come into existence when our lives were very busy. I think my mum was so worried that we weren’t preparing for our little arrival that she almost moved in and decorated the nursery herself at one point.

My lack of preparation extended to being too late to attend any of the NHS classes. At 37 weeks I booked two sessions with a local, private midwife from a personal recommendation. She was absolutely fantastic and my first introduction to hypno-birthing. She lent me a CD to listen to and explained that rather than getting too stressed about the finer points of the ‘technique’, the core idea was to relax and let your body do what it has been naturally designed to do.

The principle of going through labour as naturally as possible really appealed to me as I really don’t seem to react well to any drug, even Paracetamol makes me feel strange! So, while being open to the fact that I may change my mind mid-labour and in the ‘throws’ of contractions, I decided to give the hypno-birthing a go.

I didn’t get on very well with the CD in the end, but downloaded the Andrew Johnson app for my ipod. All you had to do was listen to the audio every day. I felt a little skeptical about attempting to do labour naturally but realized I had nothing to lose by listening and giving it a go.

As the days went by I felt more and more relaxed and convinced that whatever labour faced me with I was going to be able to handle it, the audio seemed to give me an inner confidence in myself to deal with the unknown I was about to face and the pain that I was certain to face.

Anyway, this all happened over the short space of one week. I woke early one morning with (what I thought) was awful Braxton Hicks. These continued all day and seemed to be getting worse. They started getting more regular and more painful, which is when I rang the hospital. Being 38 weeks and still with fairly spaced contractions they told me to hold off coming in and give them another call in a couple of hours. By 6pm I was sure I needed to go and get checked, which is what we did, but was still not entirely convinced I was in labour.

The nurse examined me, confirmed I was definitely in labour and tried to get me to guess how dilated I was. I reckoned only a couple of centimetres…she laughed and said 8cm!

The birthing pool was prepared, I got in and within 3 hours our little one joined us.

I had gas and air in the pool, which definitely help take the edge off. But what truly amazed me throughout the entire process of labour, was that all of the little phrases I had listened to in the hypno-birthing audio were strongly repeating themselves to me in my mind.

Every time I felt a state of panic at the pain, or started feeling scared at what was happening to me, or out of control – the thought that the more I relaxed, the more quickly my body would be able to get on with the labour. I literally felt like I’d gone into a zone of relaxation that my mind was in full control of.

Previously sceptical that ‘hypno-birthing’ was just nonsense, I now really truly believe that everyone should give it a go. It helped me more than I ever thought possible. I felt in control of my pain rather than letting it take over and as a result I was more relaxed and labour happened quickly and smoothly.
